Life has a funny way of surprising you.
One ordinary day, we were bustling around the kitchen when our oldest daughter, Blumi, casually made an announcement that stopped us in our tracks:
"I've reached out to Yaakov Langer from Inspiration for the Nation and suggested that he interview you guys for his podcast."
We laughed.
The idea of sharing our story was certainly intriguing, but it felt like one of those fun conversations that probably wouldn't ever move beyond the realm of possibility.
I must admit, though, that we were secretly flattered. The fact that our teenage daughter thought we were interesting enough to be interviewed on an internationally known podcast, and wasn't completely embarrassed by us, felt like a parenting milestone worth celebrating all by itself.
A little while later, Blumi came into the room positively glowing.
"Yaakov Langer asked when you want to come up to New York."
Suddenly, this wasn't just an idea anymore.
As we looked at the calendar, we realized that our twentieth wedding anniversary was approaching. Why not turn the trip into an adventure? After all, after twenty years of marriage, we've learned that some of life's most memorable experiences happen when you say yes to unexpected opportunities.
One of my favorite moments happened the night before the interview.
It was Motzei Shabbos, and my phone started ringing. The screen lit up with a name that instantly electrified the room:
Yaakov Langer.
The whole family jumped up and gathered around. Knowing the celebrity status Yaakov holds among our three teenage children, I immediately put the call on speakerphone for everyone's entertainment.
The reaction was priceless.
As Yaakov's voice filled the dining room through my cell phone, the kids became so giddy they nearly fell onto the floor laughing and smiling. Watching their excitement was almost as memorable as the interview itself.
The next day, when we arrived at the studio, Yaakov greeted us with a warm smile and an easygoing energy that immediately put us at ease. Within moments, it felt less like entering a studio and more like reconnecting with an old friend.
Before we began, he offered a simple piece of advice:
"This is going to be just like telling your story to a friend. You'll get fully engaged, and before you know it, you'll be on the other side wondering how it happened so fast."
He was absolutely right.
The interview began, and the stories started to flow.
As we shared memories from different chapters of our lives, we found ourselves reliving moments of providence, challenge, growth, and gratitude. Individual stories that once felt disconnected suddenly wove together into a colorful tapestry that somehow explained how we arrived at this point in our journey.
There was something unexpectedly cathartic about stepping back and viewing five decades of life through that lens.
At one point, we mentioned that the trip coincided with our twentieth wedding anniversary.
Yaakov laughed and said that he felt like a third wheel.
To the contrary.
He became the master of ceremonies for one of the most unique anniversary dates we could ever imagine. Instead of dinner and flowers, we spent the day reflecting on twenty years of marriage, family, faith, adventure, and the countless twists and turns that shaped our lives.
For that, we are deeply grateful.
Thank you, Yaakov, for creating a space where stories matter, where authenticity is celebrated, and where people can pause long enough to recognize the remarkable threads that connect the chapters of their lives.
And thank you, Blumi, for believing that our story was worth telling in the first place.
Sometimes the most meaningful adventures begin with the words, "I have an idea..."
